Things Are Coming Together!
Considering the last calendar year, it’s hard to imagine what this space looked like before. But, in case you forgot….
As the finishing touches are being added to the Fives and the Penthouse Suites, life below is retuning to “normal.” New apartments are being occupied and residents are settling in to their new common spaces!
We’re especially thankful for the new fireplace to gather around during these last few weeks of frigid weather!
And now it’s time to begin planning for Brewster’s 60 Anniversary celebration with a week of Grand Opening festivities that will culminate in a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, the likes of which Topeka has never seen!
What Does "71% Complete" Look Like?
Well…. it looks like this:
The Club Level is easily recognizable now! (above left) trim for the game room; (above center) looking into the game room; (above right) the heat lamps are in place in the new expo kitchen; (near right) an apartment only needs appliances; (far right) looking down the hall connecting the apartments on the Club Level.
The view down the hallway on the Fives is getting closer to what we remember it looking like (far left), and the sun shines brightly in someone’s new home (near left).
The facade on the Penthouse Suites being installed and we’re beginning to see a similarity to the architect’s rendering of the finished building. As the inside is continuing completion, the trees are changing into fantastic colors, enhancing the spectacular view from the top of The Redwood!

So Far, So Good . . .
To quote another industry, all systems are GO here at the Redwood Renovation! The weather has been so cooperative (except for maybe the heat) that we are already at the 61% completion mark!
1st Floor
The ground floor – the Club Level is framed and sheet rocked, beginning to look like a space that we will all enjoy! Rumor has it that countertops are being installed already…
5th Floor
The 5th floor – The Fives is all framed in and being wired and plumbed. The floor plans of the apartments are easily recognizable now. Several of the soon-to-be occupants nave even visited to se the progress!
6th Floor
And the pièce de résistance, the Penthouse Suites are almost too good to be true. Spacious, bright and open, they have truly broken the sky!
It was One of Those March Days...
… when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold, (in no particular order).
But whatever the weather, our construction crew is marching onward and upward!
On the ground floor, the kitchen and dining areas are becoming more defined while framing for the new Club Level apartments is beginning to take shape!
And the hallway is back on “The Fives,” leading to “infinity and beyond!”
They were FRAMED..... not!
It’s not a “who done it”… It’s the latest on the first floor of the Redwood Renovation at Brewster Place!
February 2023
Behind the temporary wall built during the first weeks of the project, workers have erected scores of metal studs. This is the first hint of what the refashioned apartments and executive offices will look like at completion. The next step is roughing in the electrical and plumbing.
On the fifth floor there’s not a carpet, curtain or toilet to be found. The demo is amazing! The original concrete pillars and pipes are exposed for the first time in 60 years!
Sky-Breaking Event
Most construction projects begin with a groundbreaking. Since the project is going up, a Sky-Breaking is more fitting! On December 2, 2022, exactly 60 years after the original groundbreaking for Redwood, Topeka Mayor Michael Padilla, Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce President Curtis Sneden, and other special guests helped Break the Sky with confetti cannons and streamers.
Luxury High-Rise Living at Brewster Place
in Topeka, Kansas
For nearly six decades the flagship building on the Brewster campus has been home to hundreds of retirees, offering independent living options ranging from studio to two-bedroom apartments.
Sixty years after the groundbreaking for Redwood, an extensive interior and exterior renovation project is about to commence, beginning with the addition of a sixth floor to house the new Penthouse Suites at Redwood.
