Employee Spotlights
Non-Clinical
Valerie is an RN and has been at Brewster Place for 3 years as a Community Health Nurse.
“I have 2 wonderful grown sons and a wonderful new husband! I am newly married now for six months! I have enjoyed decorating our new home together and traveling. I am also a new grandma, and I enjoy babysitting her on my days off, with a second grandbaby on the way! I also enjoy volunteering at my local church going for walks and lately trying pickleball!
I don’t have any one particular favorite memory. I have good memories of conversations with many residents over the last three years I have been here – they make me laugh! I also simply enjoy the camaraderie here in assisted living with the kaizens and the community health nurses. I enjoy coming to work!”
Frank has been at Brewster Place for 3.5 years as a Security Officer.
“I taught special education for 30 years. I took early retirement and planned to return to teaching. I realized working at Brewster I’m having way too much fun to go back to teaching. I have two amazing daughters and a snarky schnauzer. I love to camp, kayak, and see live music.
I have MANY fond memories of hysterical conversations with residents!!”
On Being a CNA...
Being a Certified Nursing Assistant is an extremely rewarding career. Being a CNA at Brewster Place is all about care, consistency, spontaneity, being on a team and being loved!
Most CNAs come to their career through circumstances that gave them an opportunity to be caregivers for someone they loved. They learned that they love to help others; being a Certified Nursing Assistant is all about helping others.
“We want their lives to be Amazing!”
They serve our residents as they would serve their own loved ones, especially those who have no family support. They work to be sure there are no gaps in the care they provide, working together as a team. They love to create relationships, experiencing different perspectives on life through the eyes of their elders. They have the freedom of play, creating engaging activities for their elders beyond bingo and coloring.
Life lessons are a part of daily life as a CNA. Lessons in patience, communication, learning to listen and hear, being a team player, learning to work with different behaviors and how to meet unique needs on an individual basis.
“They know me!”
They’ll tell you that being a CNA is not “just” a job. They’ll use words like “dignity,” “pass it on,” “heart,” “intimate,” “fun.” It’s a way to serve and care for others while being cared for and loved in return by the elders they serve. “Even though they [may] have dementia, they know me! They remember me when I come into their room and smile!”
One CNA in the Meadowlark neighborhood at the Health Center summed it up like this:
and their darkness. It’s a privilege.”
Certified Nursing Assistants on the Brewster campus serve our Health Care neighborhoods in assisted living, memory support, memory care and skilled care. Some of our CNAs also become Quality of Life Specialists, where they incorporate restorative health activities into the daily lives of our residents. Brewster Place loves to find what you’re good at and encourage you to grow – there is always room for career advancement!
