Your Life, Your Way

It would seem that the glue that holds an active lifestyle together is made up of the relaxing moments in life – what you do to replenish yourself so you can keep up with the rest of it! Sometimes those are unstructured times of literally nothing – perhaps meditation or a stroll on one of Brewster Place’s beautiful walking paths. Or it may be a quiet time of learning something new or enjoying the Topeka Symphony. This is a list of the more relaxing, restorative programming you’ll find at Brewster Place!

Leisurely exercise

Our Wellness trainer holds yoga classes several times a week for all levels of abilities – chair yoga and mat yoga. We also have classes to work on one’s balance and breathing techniques, which can be quite restorative. At other times, Brewster Place has offers Tai Chi and stretching classes. Of course, you can always take your yoga mat to the wellness studio and have your own private time of yoga too!

Our indoor saltwater pool also can provide great relaxation with a leisurely lap swim or just some quiet time floating around – floating is great for alleviating all kinds of tension in one’s body!

There are many green spaces and garden areas to enjoy on the Brewster Place campus with seating areas nearby. Perhaps gardening is something that you find to be relaxing – there are always opportunities to get involved through our residents’ gardening club. You might especially enjoy our pollinator garden or our annual tomato growing contest.

Other outdoor areas include a relaxing water fountain feature, a beautiful gazebo, a series of walking paths and a dog park!

Spiritual restoration

For some inner peace, you might want to visit the Chapel, located next to the Market and the Pavilion. Our full-time Chaplain is available to discuss any spiritual needs that you might have. Our chaplain conducts regular worship services and vespers and other denominations will also come in and conduct special services. The chapel is a beautiful space for a time of introspection and thanksgiving.

There are resident caregivers support groups, a “Stronger Together” group, groups that focus on mindfulness and “Unbound Gratitude”, current events discussion groups, a genealogy group, writing club, and gardening club for those who like to fellowship with others of similar interests.

We also have regularly scheduled visits from therapy dogs, if you ever find you’re in need of some unconditional puppy love!

Expanding your horizons

Brewster Place is proud to sponsor the KU Osher Lecture Series for those who wish to continue expanding their mind. There are also occasions that special interest speakers come in and present a program perhaps on a local artist or an author who is an expert on a particular subject. Brewster Place also is a great supporter of the arts in Topeka – the Topeka Symphony, the Topeka Festival Singers, the Shawnee County Chorale, the Topeka Civic Theater, and the Topeka Performing Arts Center (among others) if you might find an evening of theater and music to be relaxing.

The new art studios in Redwood are another great place to unwind, discover and nurture your creative side! The studios feature a unique art studio, specifically designed for visual arts, a fully equipped quilting/sewing studio, as well as a studio for all other types of creative “crafts”. Our Creative Arts Coordinator is well versed in teaching and facilitating about any artistic endeavor you may wish to pursue, whether as a novice or as a seasoned practitioner!

Brewster Place houses 2 libraries – one on the lower level in Redwood and the other in The Evergreens living room. Both libraries are open 24 hours a day. All library activity is managed by resident volunteers and the Library Committee. For other library needs, the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library brings its Red Carpet Service to 3 different locations on our campus every two weeks.
